I apologize for the delay! Illness cannot be helped. :)

I believe that Emma and Dexter were part of a lost generation or reminded me of those from Hemingway's time in that they seemed lost, unsure of themselves, and unsure of their direction in life. I believe that many young adults go through the same process - I know I did! That seems to be what Hemingway is referring to when he says that each generation is a lost generation. As we mature, we find ourselves and our purpose (hopefully) and our lives become better as a result. Although it is unfortunate that Emma meets an untimely death in the novel, one could predict that Emma and Dexter would have had a wonderful, fulfilling life together once they figured out what they wanted from life and settled down.

A really interesting take on One Day. The Hemingway line of thought is intriguing; in what way do you suggest Dex and Em are of a lost generation?

My review: <a href="http://www.bibliofreak.net/2011/12/review-one-day-by-david-nicholls.html" rel="nofollow">One Day by David Nicholls</a>

Gigi,

Thanks for the comment! I'm so glad you found me. You have answered one of the questions that I am sure our students are going to ask every year. "Why do we have to read this stuff?" :) I just figured out how to offer email subscriptions. If you are interested, go to this link and sign up. http://feedburner.google.com/fb/a/mailverify?uri=Iarumaccom :)

What a lovely blog! As a hopeful, and hopefully soon employed, language arts teacher, I'd love to keep up with it. Perhaps we could exchange links? Every generation seems as if they are lost and the world is going to hell in a hand basket. That's why literature and history are important to us; it tells us we are human, want the same things regardless of the era, and experience angst each generation.

I was actually IN boarding school when I read it!

When I got home, I went to the museum and bounced some marbles as a tribute to Holden.

One of the greats!
